Our Top Tips, Plus Our Estate and Photos Picks of The Week.

As an event planner, our job is to help our clients navigate through sticky situations.

Here are a handful of tips to help you dance your way through the planning process, without stepping on anyone's toes.

1. You want to exclude a difficult sibling from the pre-wedding festivities.

Consider the consequences before your make your decision. Excluding a sibling will cause hurt feelings and can close the door on the relationship.

If possible, sit down with your parents and your sibling and discuss your concerns to see if there is a reasonable solution.  Let that sibling know that he or she means the world to you and how much you want them at your wedding, but there has to be parameters set before the event, so everyone is on the same page.

2. A relative or good friend has offered his or her services for your wedding.

I always recommend hiring someone not related to you to do photography, catering, etc.  There are several reasons why this makes sense, such as they might not have the skill set or financial contribution to create the look or level of service that you are seeking.  Gently let them know how much you appreciate their generous offer, but you would prefer that they be a guest, so they can enjoy the wedding and celebrate with you.

3. Whether or not to serve shots at your wedding.

Every time our clients offer shots to their guests, I can guarantee that there will be people who drink too much and get sick.  As the host, you want your guests to be safe (not drinking and driving) and for you to avoid not having to deal with "situations" that present themselves with too much alcohol.

4. The Do's and Don'ts of giving toasts.

Don't allow an intoxicated friend or family member to give a toast.
I have seen this done a handful of times and it is horrifying to watch.
You and your fiancĂ© are vulnerable to the person standing in front of the microphone and having your guests hear personal stories that could cause a lot of embarrassment.

5. Thank you notes - when and how to send them.

Send a thank you note within two weeks of receiving the gift.
Don't send a pre-written note or an email thanking them for the gift.
Take the time to write a handwritten note and thank them for the gift and let them know how you plan to use it.

6. Choose your wedding party wisely.

Don't select your bridal party based on balancing each side of the wedding party, so they are even - this is the wrong reason.  Choose true friends that have your back and will support you on your big day.

7. Keep your wedding safe.

If you have friends or family members that want to party at your event, hire shuttles or setup an uber account with promo codes, so they don't drink and drive.  We had Ubers at a wedding recently and it worked out well.

Tips for Creating an Original Event, Plus My Newest Adventure - Getting Fit The Healthy Way

There are so many diets and weight-loss plans for losing weight and getting in shape that it's difficult to know which one is right.  I have tried everything from carb-free diets to special teas and coffees to strenuous work-outs; many of our clients want to slim down before their fittings and they endure the same challenges.

My goal is to feel better and look better while building strength for healthier bones and joints, so I recently enlisted the help of a personal trainer at Pasadena Elite Fitness .  My trainer Danielle has placed me on a serious regimen that consists of cardio, weight-training, nutrition counseling, and dietary changes.  She keeps me on track through measurements, body fat analysis, and regular weigh-in sessions. Next week I will post a photo of myself, followed by a new one in four weeks, so I can track my progress.   Stay tuned....xo

Tips for Creating an Original Wedding:

The Dress -
You don't need to spend a fortune to find a unique and beautiful gown.   When I first started my company, there was a popular dress with a sash that came in a handful of colors - we had at least five weddings that year with brides wearing this exact dress.   Your dress should be comfortable and flattering, should make you feel uniquely beautiful, and should be within your budget.

The Location -
If you are renting a private estate, please make sure that you're working with a reputable company, with full authority to rent the property.  Also, make sure that the estate is not for sale.  We have been renting estates for over 10 years and I have heard several horror stories about last-minute estate unavailability, a true disaster!

The Food -
There are countless wonderful caterers in our business.  While interviewing caterers, be sure to check out their reviews.  Accomplished caterers understand how to customize a menu to fit their client's taste and budget; they also understand that their presentation is a big part of the allure and atmosphere of the event.

The Photography -
Your photographer should be someone who is easy to be around and makes the session as effortless as possible - their work is your keepsake.  You don't have to spend an-arm-and-a-leg to find a great photographer, however, you need to find someone who can comfortably and professionally deliver the key moments you want captured.

The Traditions -
These days, very few brides and grooms follow all of the wedding traditions; it is not necessary to have a father-daughter or mother-son dance.  If you don't have an uncle or brother who can share this moment with you, then you may wish to dance with your mother or skip the tradition entirely. Your planner can help you create a wedding guideline which suits your own personality, style, and panache.

Guidelines to Renting an Estate

Every time we rent out a private estate, it occurs to me that there are several helpful tips to consider.

1. When looking for a property for your event, estimate your guest count on the higher end to ensure that the venue is large enough to handle your event and setup.  Homeowners give us a quote based on the guest count.  Later, if our clients add more guests, we make sure that there is a maximum guest count stated in the agreement and what the additional cost is per person.

2. Make sure your event planner takes photos of the home before the event; if there are any spills or damages, this will confirm if they were pre-existing.

3. Make sure you have a walk-through during the day so you can see what the venue looks like should you want your florist to change or spruce up any flower beds.  Our company will list any requests on the location agreement so both parties are in agreement of any changes.

4. Purchase special event insurance for your event. We make it a requirement at all of our events and require that the event professionals carry it.

5.  Insist that your rental company place Astroturf or something similar under the kitchen area (this setup is usually on the driveway) to avoid any spills and to prevent paying for power washes.

6. Be prepared with decor decisions if the area you choose is windy.

7. Confirm who will be hauling all of the trash at the end of the night. Homeowners do not want garbage left on their properties - this can attract wild animals.

8. Check the weather 10 days out to make sure that your guests and event professionals will be comfortable.

9. Verify the bathroom situation - availability and stocking up on important items.

10. Hire a professional coordinator to handle this type of event, so you can enjoy yourself.

How to Plan a Wedding and Enjoy the Process, Plus Our Holiday Picks of the Week

Happy Memorial Day!

Our company is committed to making sure that our clients have the event of their dreams.

We have all heard horror stories about weddings gone wild.  Although the wedding only lasts five or six hours, the time that you spend making the plans are the most important and should be enjoyable.

We want our clients to have fun and to be able to lean on us to help them navigate through planning process.

Here are some steps that will help make this journey easier for you and your fiancé.

1. Create a budget that will work with your guest count. Be realistic and talk with knowledgeable event professionals to ensure that both numbers match.  If you want to keep costs down -
  • Limit the guest list.
  • Limit the type of bar you offer at your event.  Consider a limited bar.
  • Set your priorities on what is most important to you - your dress, lighting, photographer, venue, caterer.
2. Be realistic with how much time you will be able to devote to planning your wedding.  If you find that your schedule is too tight, consider hiring a planner to help you with the tasks that you won't have time to manage.

3.  Consider your out-of-town guests and their transportation and accommodation needs.  Will you have a lot of small children at your wedding? If this is the case, then you may wish to hire an insured and reputable baby-sitting service to be on site.

4. Hire your event professionals with whom you have a rapport.  This is especially true for the photographer.  You and your fiancĂ© will be spending a lot of time with your photographer on your wedding day and that connection is very important.

5.  Schedule a massage for you and your fiancĂ© the week of your wedding.

6. Start writing your thank-you notes within two weeks of receiving your gifts.  Your guests will appreciate it and you won't risk forgetting who sent you which gift.  When you select your invites, discuss your thank-you notes with your paper house so there is continuity.

7. When it comes to a gift registry, decide on what you and your fiancĂ© really need, then choose a store or business that will carry the items that you want.  Give your parents the information in case friends and family ask and list your registry on your web site.
