Number one tip - be as polite as you can to your vendors. Over and over again, I have seen event professionals give great service and fair deals to really nice people, plus they go the extra mile on the event day. This does not mean that they won't with someone who is mean, but this theory really does work in the event planning business.
Ask for at least three bids with every vendor to make sure that you have an idea of pricing - high and low. Taking the least expensive route does not mean you will be disappointed, however, the old saying, 'you get what you pay for' does apply in most cases.
If you are on a budget, see if you can have your wedding during the off season - January through March or during November. I see better deals during these months.
Try and choose flowers that are in season - they look better and you won't pay a premium price.
Ceremony flowers - when designing your event, ask your florist if he or she can re-purpose your flowers at the reception.
Sweetheart table - instead of a floral arrangement ask your event planner to place your wedding bouquet on the table. I love this look along with a lot of pretty candles.

Tips to Help You Avoid Stress and Wasting Time
Before you start planning, have a budget in place. However, remember that rentals and entertainment can cause your budget to stray.
Decide on a guest count and budget and dates before you choose your venue.
Interview planners that understand you and your goals and make sure that it is someone that you like. I refer to it as 'rent a friend'.
When you have your vendor walk through meeting, make sure you have a weather contingency plan while your vendors are present.
Start collecting photos of weddings that inspire you, this will help your vendors learn more about you. We love the web site Pinterest. Brides can create their inspiration boards and show their vendors what they like.
Party Planning Ideas
Once you choose a theme, think about how you would like to welcome your guests - maybe a CD with ambient sounds like jungle sounds if you are having an exotic outdoors party.
Hire entertainment that works with your theme. We have had spray on body art (sexy object on someones back or leg) or animal trainers with interesting (but safe) animals during the cocktail hour. I love watching the guests interact and the photos reflect the fun.
Inspiration - choose a favorite movie and let it inspire you with the music, decor, menu and party attire.
