5. Ask for three written quotes from each prospective vendor and have your event planner review their services before you hire them.

When I was growing up, my mom and dad loved to entertain and one of my favorite times of the year was Super Bowl Sunday.

I loved the thrill of the game and my parent's parties!

My mom knew how to throw a really fun party and I loved helping her.

For those of you planning a Super Bowl party for the upcoming NY Giants vs. New England Patriots game on Sunday, February 5, 2012, here are a few planning tips -

create a fun guest list

download a fun template, print your copy on card stock and fill in the blanks - if you run out of time to mail - send an Evite.

table scape - have fun with your buffet table and decorate it with the two team colors - this year both teams have similar colors - red, white and blue.

Try to go online and order each team's flags through their official web sites and schedule the delivery so they arrive in time for the party.

Add cocktail napkins, balloons and cocktail plates and glassware
in team colors for fun.

Decide on your bar - will it be a variety of libations or an assortment of beers and wine.

Buffets work out great for Super Bowl parties - here are some menu ideas from the geniuses at TV Food Network -

Sweet and Sour Pork Sliders

INGREDIENTS

MEATBALLS:

1 pound lean ground pork
1 tablespoon grated garlic
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
1 tablespoon Shaohsing rice wine or dry sherry
1 heaping teaspoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 scallion, finely chopped
Pinch sea salt
Freshly ground white pepper
Peanut oil, for frying

SAUCE:

1 tablespoon peanut oil
1 tablespoon peeled and grated ginger

1 cup hoisin sauce
3 tablespoons honey

SLIDERS:

16 slider buns or Hawaiian-style sweet rolls
Shredded romaine lettuce

Cucumber slices
Cherry tomatoes, halved

DIRECTIONS

For the meatballs: In a large bowl, thoroughly combine the pork, garlic, soy sauce, rice wine, cornstarch, sesame oil, garlic, egg, scallion, salt and pepper. Divide the mixture into 8 portions and form 8 meatballs; set aside.

Fill a wok or large pot halfway with peanut oil. Heat the oil to 350 degrees F over medium-high heat. If frying in a wok, make sure that the wok is stable on a burner or wok ring.

Fry the meatballs until golden brown and cooked through (an instant-read thermometer should read 165 degrees F), 5 to 7 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and let drain on paper towels.

For the sauce: Carefully transfer the oil to a heat-proof container and wipe out the wok. Heat the wok over high heat and add the peanut oil. Stir-fry the ginger for 30 seconds, and then stir in the hoisin sauce and honey. Bring to a simmer, and then cook for 1 to 2 minutes. If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in a little water to thin it out. Return the meatballs to the wok and toss them in the sauce to coat.

For the sliders: Layer the bottom of the buns with shredded lettuce and a couple cucumber slices. Cut the meatballs in half and place half the meatball, cut-side down, on the bottom bun. Add the top bun. Skewer half a cherry tomato with a sandwich pick and insert into the slider to hold it together. Repeat with the remaining sandwiches.

Cheese and Bacon Potato

Ingredients

4 baking potatoes, cut into 1/2 inch slices

1/4 cup melted butter

8 slices bacon - cooked and crumbled

8 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese

1/2 cup chopped green onions (optional)

Directions

1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

2.Brush both side of potato slices with butter; place them on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in the preheated 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) oven for 30 to 40 minutes or until lightly browned on both sides, turning once.

3.When potatoes are ready, top with bacon, cheese, and green onion; continue baking until the cheese has melted. Add some sour cream if you like on the side.

Macaroni and 4 Cheeses

INGREDIENTS

Cooking spray
1 pound elbow macaroni
2 (10-ounce) packages frozen pureed winter squash
2 cups 1 percent lowfat milk
4 ounces extra-sharp Cheddar, grated (about 1 1/3 cups)
2 ounces Monterrey jack cheese, grated (about 2/3 cup)
1/2 cup part-skim ricotta cheese

1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon powdered mustard
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons unseasoned bread crumbs
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
1 teaspoon olive oil

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 9 by 13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the macaroni and cook until tender but firm, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large bowl.

Meanwhile, place the frozen squash and milk into a large saucepan and cook over a low heat, stirring occasionally and breaking up the squash with a spoon until it is defrosted. Turn the heat up to medium and cook until the mixture is almost simmering, stirring occasionally. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the Cheddar, jack cheese, ricotta cheese, salt, mustard and cayenne pepper. Pour cheese mixture over the macaroni and stir to combine. Transfer the macaroni and cheese to the baking dish.

Combine bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese and oil in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the top of the macaroni and cheese. Bake for 20 minutes, then broil for 3 minutes so the top is crisp and nicely browned.

BEVERAGE IDEAS FOR YOUR PARTY

2 (750-ml) bottles white wine, chilled
1 cup brandy
2 navel oranges, sliced

1 lemon, sliced
1 lime, sliced
1/4 cup superfine sugar

DIRECTIONS

Pour the wine and brandy over the fruit and sugar in a large serving bowl. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Stick a ladle in the sangria so people can serve themselves and have a full bucket of ice by the side of the bowl. (Don't let the ice run out.)

1 cup sugar, plus more to taste
15 whole cloves

2 small or 1 large cinnamon sticks
1 navel orange

DIRECTIONS

In a large non-reactive saucepan, combine Cabernet, 1 cup sugar, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. Cut the orange in half and juice both halves into the bowl; then add the orange halves to the pan. Heat over medium-low until steaming but not boiling. Let cook over low heat for about 30 minutes to blend flavors.

Season with more sugar to taste, if desired. Ladle from pot into mugs, making sure not to serve any stray cloves or pieces of orange.

For many of our clients, this is the time of year when they start their venue search and the planning process.

Gianna's Tips of the Week -

1. Determine a budget before you sign any agreements.

2. Estimate your guest count, so you can make sure it works with your budget and venue.

3. Interview event planners and check out their references before hiring. We recommend doing background checks on Yelp, Better Business Bureau and Google. Find out which ones offer services that you need and what you can afford. Gather three proposals then make your decision. Remember, when hiring a planner, it is like renting a friend - you want to hire someone you like and trust.

4. Find a venue that allows you to have the event you want (i.e., hiring your own caterer if that is a requirement, going late, accommodating your guest count) while working with your budget.

5. Select flowers that will be in season. This can save you money and the flowers will look more radiant and colorful.

6. Start looking for your dress after you find your venue. I love to see the wedding dress work with the style of the venue.

Getting engaged and finding the right diamond

Happy Holidays! This is the time of the year when couples get engaged. I have known David Marcus and his lovely wife Karen for a very long time. My mother and I met Karen when I was 16 years old in the lobby of the Beverly Hills Hotel and we have been friends ever since.

Marcus Diamonds is an importer of fine diamonds and a prime manufacturer of jewelry on their premises. They are located in downtown Los Angeles in the jewelry district. Marcus Diamonds offers first class customer service, the best selection of rings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and their specialty is custom made orders. I had the unique opportunity to speak with David Marcus, owner of this reputable jewelry business, who gave me the inside scoop on his company. David was President of Diamond Club West Coast from 2000 until 2010.

GP - How long have you been in the diamond business?

DM - Since 1960.

GP - How did you get your start in the diamond business?

DM- I grew up working for my Uncle in Israel. I learned every aspect of the business from polishing diamonds, then when I got older, I learned trading and cutting from the best in the business.

GP - When someone is ready to pop the question, what is the best way to propose with the engagement ring? Since most guys don't know what their fiance will like (unless she shows them) and would rather avoid buying the wrong setting (like my sweet husband did - yes, I just admitted that), what do you advise?

DM- We can sell the diamond and place it in a simple setting that will cost $200-300. After the couple becomes engaged, they make an appointment to come into our office and choose the setting. We will credit the price paid for the band towards the new setting.

GP - When selecting a diamond and the clients have a budget, but still want quality and something nice, what do you suggest?

DM- Since diamonds come in all different shapes, sizes and clarity, I would meet with them and see what is most important to them, then let them make the decision.

GP - Who determines the value of diamonds?

DM - Supply and demand. The prices start to jump as you exceed one carat. In the 1960's, the Marquis diamond was popular and in demand, now it is the least popular and the price has dropped. Again, supply and demand.

GP - Please explain about reputable certification. Who is the most prestigious?

DM - I would list the most reputable labs as such:

GIA - Gemological Institute of America is the most prestigious

then, EGL - European Gemological Laboratory,

and third is IGI - International Gemological Institute (largest laboratory in the world).

GP - What is the most expensive cut today?

DM - The round is the most expensive cut.

GP - What are the different cuts?

DM -Emerald, round, princess, cushion (between square and round), square, oval, pear, heart and radiant.

GP - How does someone choose the right jeweler?

DM - The client should establish a rapport with the jeweler. Even though someone can read volumes on how to buy a diamond, they need a jeweler that they can trust. If they don't have trust, they need to move on and find someone else whom they will trust.

GP -What are the four C's?

DM - cut (shape), color (D-Z), Clarity (imperfections - Flawless (best) to Internally Flawless which ranges from VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2 (eye visible) and then there is SI3 (which is in between SI2 and I1) and carat - size.

GP - Tell me an interesting fact about diamonds?

DM - Diamonds are like finger prints, there are no two alike.

GP - What are your hours?

Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Appointments are preferred.

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey or rum
1/2 ounce hazelnut liqueur, such as Frangelico
1/2 ounce Irish cream liqueur, such as Bailey's
Hot coffee
Dollop of Grand Marnier Whipped Cream

Directions

In a glass coffee mug, stir together whiskey, hazelnut liqueur, and Irish cream; top with coffee. Garnish cocktail with whipped cream and serve immediately.

Salmon Mousse

Ingredients

1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin, (from a 1/4-ounce envelope)
4 ounces smoked salmon, coarsely chopped
1 1/4 cups sour cream
1 to 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
coarse salt
fresh dill, for garnish (optional)
crackers or baguette slices, for serving

Directions

Place 3 tablespoons cold water in a small saucepan, and sprinkle with gelatin; let soften, 5 minutes. Gently heat over low, stirring, just until gelatin dissolves; set aside.
In the bowl of a food processor, combine salmon, sour cream, and lemon juice. Puree until smooth; season with salt. With motor running, add slightly cooled gelatin mixture, and blend until combined.
Pour into two 8-ounce ramekins or bowls. Without touching surface, cover container with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm but spreadable, about 2 hours or up to overnight. Garnish mousse with dill, if desired, and serve with crackers or baguette slices.

Artichoke Puff Pastries

Ingredients

4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large shallot, minced
2 teaspoons minced garlic (from 3 small cloves)
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour, plus more for surface
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
1/2 cup homemade or store-bought low-sodium chicken stock, warmed
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
Pinch of cayenne pepper
1 pound frozen artichoke hearts, thawed and chopped (3 cups)
1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese (1 ounce)
1/2 cup finely grated Pecorino Romano cheese (1 ounce)
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh thyme
1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 packages (14 ounces each) frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 large egg, lightly beaten for egg wash

Directions

Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook shallot and garlic for 1 minute. Add flour, and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Add wine, and cook until reduced by half, about 2 minutes. Whisk in milk and stock. Bring to a boil. Season with 1 teaspoon salt, some pepper, and the cayenne. Simmer until thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in artichoke hearts, cheeses, thyme, zest, and mustard. Let cool completely. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out puff pastry to a 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into forty 3-inch squares (you will have pastry left over).
Arrange 1 tablespoon artichoke mixture in center of each square. Brush 2 perpendicular edges with egg wash, and fold over to form a triangle with remaining edges, pressing to seal. Brush 1 corner of triangle with egg wash and join it to the opposite point. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough and filling. Refrigerate or freeze until firm, 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Brush turnovers with egg wash. Bake until golden, about 20 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

Warm Brie and Pecan Appetizer

Ingredients

1 small wheel of Brie or Camembert (about 9 ounces)
1/2 cup pecan pieces
3 tablespoons light-brown sugar
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
crackers or sliced baguette, for serving

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place cheese on a rimmed baking sheet; bake until softened, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer to a serving plate; cool about 20 minutes.
While cheese cools, place nuts on a clean baking sheet; bake until toasted and fragrant, 7 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle nuts over cheese.
In a small saucepan, combine sugar and maple syrup. Bring to a boil over medium heat; simmer until foamy, 1 to 2 minutes. Drizzle warm sauce over slightly cooled cheese and nuts; serve with crackers or baguette.

Gianna and Tim's wedding

Having a client with the same name as me was really fun. The timeline read as though I was getting married and coordinating the wedding day - it was funny!

There were a lot of details added to the design such as the napkin rings, gold chargers, black silcara table linens and napkins, gold votive holders to give it a romantic supper club feel. The dance floor was in black and white and the ivory pipe and drape really made everything come together beautifully.

Emily and Aaron were married on May 14, 2011 at Saddlerock Ranch in Malibu.

Here are some of my favorite shots from their beautiful wedding.

This cool and talented couple thought about every detail - they brewed their own beer, created mustache straws for the Izzy sodas, created cute bags to hold fresh carrots, (approved by Saddlerock) so the guests could feed the horses, plus a cute cake topper with a bride and groom on snow boards (their favorite sport).

The guests dined under twinkle lights and chandeliers and after dinner they danced the night away. I wish this couple all the happiness in the world.

GSN Reunion

I thought it would be a great idea to get my former bosses and coworkers together for a reunion. On Monday, September 19, 2011, about 40 of us gathered at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Century City after almost 10 years. The reunion brought back some wonderful memories. My only regret, is that I did not have a photographer with us to take photos, instead we used my Iphone. Next time...

A Charity Show for GAP at House of Blues

Last Sunday, I produced a charity show at the House of Blues for GAP, which stands for Grandparents as Parents. The talent lineup was great - Deana Martin, daughter of Dean Martin, performed several of her father's hits and McKenzie Westmore was our emcee, plus former Los Angeles Ram Vince Ferragamo went on stage to assist Deana Martin with the live auction at the end of the show. GAP's mission is to provide programs and services that meet the urgent and ongoing needs of grandparents and other relatives raising at-risk children.

Our Emcee McKenzie Westmore, who is the current host of FaceOff.

McKenzie, her son Maddox and her family were great. She is so professional and I enjoyed working with her.

I really enjoyed watching Deana Martin perform and listening to her stories of the her dad and his buddies Frank and Sammy. She is so talented and knows how to entertain. The audience loved her and so did I, plus it was really cool to be with her right before she went on - she has so much energy and she is adorable.

The production team at the House of Blues made it so easy for me to do what I had to do - focus on the show and make sure it ran smoothly and on time.

While we standing off stage, I asked Jeff to show me a famous autograph on the wall. He showed me where Tupac Shakur signed his name right before his last show; this was right before he went to Vegas.

Janet was the special events manager, who made sure that the brunch and event ran smoothly. She is on top of her game and so was Lynn who made sure the dressing rooms had the essentials.

Thank you GAP and House of Blues for allowing me to be a part of a fun show and good cause.

About a week ago I was overseeing a setup at an estate wedding and I thought about things that an event planner never wants to hear:

All kidding aside, we make it part of our policy to confirm sprinklers are off 48 hours before the wedding and I got ordained just in case the officiate gets stuck in traffic and can't make it to the ceremony.

How Estate Rental Costs Work

Recently, one of my favorite clients, who is a popular event planner in
Los Angeles asked me to write a Blog about this subject.

There are two options when renting an estate. Some homeowners prefer to rent their homes with outside only access while others allow inside and outside access. The degree of inside access depends on the individual estate. Hours vary for setup, however most wedding and event professionals will want to start at 9 am. This saves our clients additional labor costs since they will have more time to setup.

Estates are not generally rented by the hour.

Homeowners understand that some vendors will need access the night before for the lighting installation which includes a lighting test (this usually takes 6-8 hours).

For a special effect, tents can be rented at an additional cost. An additional setup day is required.

On an event day, the rental company will need access in the morning to place all of the rentals and then the other vendors will follow.

If the party or ceremony starts around 4 PM and ends around 10 PM or 11 PM, then the strike will occur the following day. This is to ensure that the surrounding neighbors are not disturbed.

A normal strike takes six or eight hours and it can take longer

for larger productions.

Having an estate wedding can cost 30-40% more since everything is a la carte.

However, if you do have a flexible budget and this is your dream - we can assist you.

Our company requires security and insurance at all of our events to ensure that our clients have a great experience and so does the homeowner.

In addition, to mansion rentals, we can produce events at private estates and venues in Southern California, the US and abroad.

I love to see our brides have fun and dress up for their rehearsal dinner. Every bride is different - some like dresses that are sophisticated (the dress on top) and some like flirty dresses, like the one above.

I am always trying to find cool wedding gifts for when my husband and I are invited to a wedding. My challenge is that by the time I go on the couple's registry to buy a gift, all the good gifts are gone, so I'm left with either knives (wrong message) or a $900 blender (I don't think so).

I love this globe - if you are planning on spending a couple hundred dollars, this could be a very cool gift.

Wedding Faux Paux

Thought it was time to blog about wedding faux paux after watching a few uncomfortable situations play out more than once.

The White Dress

Every once in awhile, a female guest will show up at someone else's wedding wearing a white or ivory dress - similar to this one. White or ivory is one of those colors that is usually reserved for the bride, unless it is chosen by the bride for the bridal party to wear - just like Kate and William's wedding. I don't recommend wearing white, but if you choose to go down this rabbit hole, be prepared for a few stares and it might be a good idea to take one of your friends with you when you go to the ladies room for a little protection.

Toasts

If you have to give a toast, please try and do it sober. We understand that sometimes it takes a couple glasses of wine to work up the nerve, BUT, when you are under the influence, you could say something that you can't take back. If the wedding is being filmed, well that could haunt you unless you can find away to bribe their videographer to erase your cameo appearance.... Same goes with having an open microphone at your wedding, this can be fun at the local comedy club, but I have seen it go terribly wrong at weddings.

Long Cocktail Hours Can Be Party Killers

From time to time, a client will insist on having a long cocktail hour. We always respect our client's wishes, however, each time we can see the energy level amongst the guests drop. The guests get bored. If you have to have a long cocktail hour, make sure you have plenty of appetizers, ice, libations, heaters and great entertainment to keep things moving.

When a guest shows up without sending in their RSVP, it can delay the start of the event and the couple's grand entrance. In preparation of an event or wedding, hosts spend a lot of time on their table layout and seating assignments. An experienced event planner or a captain knows how to handle these situations, but if there is not one present, then the hosts have to try and accommodate the surprise guest before they can enjoy their own party.

Feeding Cake to One Another

This is an interesting custom that can go down hill very fast. Brides spend two hours in hair and make up and it is not inexpensive. The idea of having cake and frosting decorate the bride's face seems wrong. I don't know this couple (we pulled the photo from the Internet), but I am willing to bet that he just realized that she is not laughing anymore....

Why Hire an Event or Wedding Planner - Updated

One of the questions that we hear frequently from potential clients is, "why is it important to hire an event planner?". So, I thought it would be a good idea to address this topic on this week's blog.

Here are my top reasons and the list keeps growing and growing.

1. Do You Want to Work on Your Wedding Day or at Your Party?

Clients and their close friends and family should be able to relax at their event and not have to be concerned about vendors, logistics and trying to resolve last minute issues or an emergency during the event (such as one of the groomsmen's cars getting hit in the parking lot). This really happened - I can't make this stuff up. Once you hire the right event planner, he or she can adapt to your ways and make your event or party reflect your wishes from start to finish.

2. Vendor Agreements -

Event planners are not lawyers and should never claim to be one. However, many of us have years of experience knowing what to look for in vendor's agreements. Our goal is to confirm important information that can save our client's from headaches and costly mistakes before they sign on the dotted line. One of my clients confided to me that her daughter had signed a photography agreement that cost them thousands of dollars on the back end. It is an unfortunate situation that could have been avoided if an experienced event planner could have reviewed the contract prior to the client signing. Good event planners pay for themselves in the long run!

3. Connections to Talented and Reputable Vendors -

We work hard to develop great relationships with top professionals in our industry from decor, floral, music, paper, make up and hair stylists, couture, lighting, entertainment, fabric and rentals, etc. These strong relationships help us to give our clients successful events along with fair prices. Our vendors know that we are a repeat client, so they work hard to make sure that our clients are happy. Personally, I won't recommend a vendor that is difficult, disrespectful, dishonest or performs substandard work - it is never worth the hassle!

4. Keeping You Stress Free -

It is important for an event planner to listen to their client's vision and concerns, so we can ensure that their event runs smoothly. Many clients are trying to plan a wedding for the first time and they might make a decision that could cause their ceremony to start late and throw everything into overtime (i.e., the wait staff) or worse case, they might have to end the band early due to time constraints at the venue. When we are hired, we start reviewing the details so every precaution is taken.

5. The Wrap Up-
Periodically, rental items can get misplaced or one of the vendors might make a mistake during the setup or strike that can affect your security deposit. Our office fields the calls after the wedding or special event and we work hard to resolve any issues quickly and fairly. I believe it makes sense for the planner to field these calls, since we were there and we are usually privy to what was happening on that day. There is nothing worse then returning after a two week honeymoon and find out that you have to deal with these issues.

6. Sticking with an Idea-
Many of our clients come to us with several ideas, but they are unsure how to make them work with their overall theme or budget. We help them to organize their thoughts and pull the resources together to create their dream come true event while respecting their budget and keeping them sane.

7. Combining Different Cultures and or Religions -
I love these types of weddings - seeing families with different cultures come together to celebrate the couple's nuptials. I am not sure how many of these weddings we have done, but in eight years of having our company, I think I have worked on a couple of dozen. I think what I enjoy the most is the process of respecting the different religions and or cultures and bringing it all together to make it work. I know sometimes it can be challenging, but it can be done successfully. We have a future blog dedicated to this subject, since it we see it happening more frequently.

8. Trying to plan a wedding or special event with a busy schedule?
Many of our clients work over 50 hours per week and have hectic schedules. Once we are hired, we sit down with them and create a planning guide that helps them to keep everything in perspective. Our office makes calls and collects information that our clients don't have time to handle. Some of our clients might need assistance with planning a wedding that is being planned in less than a four months. We can help them find the venue, secure the agreement, and jump in right away with reputable vendors, invites and creating the timeline that makes it appear that the wedding was planned a year or more in advance.

Tips from The Pros - Part VIII - Paper House - Couture and ready made invitations

Some of our clients are going green to help save the environment and when they do, we have great resources for them. However, for our clients that love paper, from the texture to how it sets the tone for an event, we have great resources.

Recently, I interviewed Anahi Carrillo Felch of Nicobelle Paperie and asked her questions that we are asked frequently.

GP: What should a bride do to prepare for a consultation with you or a paper house?

ACF: The creation of a wedding invitation begins with a consultation by phone, email or in person.

My goal during this consultation is to find out all about the couple and the event that they are planning. The more details they can provide, including photos of the dress, flowers, and wedding location and descriptions of likes and dislikes, the better. Even the story of how they met and what interests both share are great help in putting together the perfect invitation.

Then we’ll note which pieces they will need (invitation card, response card, reception card...) and any pieces they are interested in for the reception (menu, program, escort cards..).

GP: Do you work with couture only?

ACF: No, we also have some ready made invitations to choose from such as Monique Lhuillier.

GP: What is couture?

ACF: In couture everything from the design and printing process, to the embellishments and materials are different. Each and every project is one of a kind and made to fit the couple’s personality and style.

GP: How much should someone budget for the following with couture:

ACF: Each project is very different. Based on the complexity of the design, as well as printing costs, letterpress designs begin at $2,000 for 100 invitation sets and $800 for 100 save-the-dates.

GP: If someone does not have the budget for couture, what are alternative routes that they can take and still be happy with the paper and style?

ACF: Any extra touch can make an invitation set feel special:

Paper bands – a custom designed or patterned paper band wrapped around your invitation will keep all your pieces together & add an extra design element {wedding logo, monogram, a pop of color…}

Envelope liners - lining in solid paper or custom printed patterned paper add a lovely surprise for the recipient.

Pocket Folders – can be sealed with a wax seal, decorate label, ribbon, or paper band.

GP: What part of the planning process should they plan to meet with you?

ACF: It is always better to have more time than not enough. Wedding invitation etiquette suggests save the dates be sent 6 months in advance & up to 12 months if it is a destination wedding. Wedding invitations should be sent out 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding or 10 to 12 weeks in advance if it is a destination wedding.

It is recommended you start the save the date and/or wedding invitation process at least 6 to 8 weeks before the date you would like to receive them. Turnaround time is approximately 3 to 4 weeks from approval of your proof.

GP: What is the quickest time you are able to turn an invite around - ready made paper with Flat printing?

ACF:Usually, we need at least 2 weeks from approval to finalize a job.GP: What are the different types of printing?

ACF: We offer a variety of printing techniques. The most popular method is letterpress printing, which delivers a luxurious finish and impression on paper. Other methods we offer are offset (flat) printing and engraving.

GP: I am always hearing conflicting opinions on whose name should go first on the thank you?

ACF: Traditionally, a man's name preceded a woman's on an envelope address, and his first and surname were not separated (Jane and John Kelly). Nowadays, the order of the names—whether his name or hers comes first—does not matter and either way is acceptable. The exception is when one member of the couple 'outranks' the other—the one with the higher rank is always listed first.

ABC Dinner - Meet the Venue Veterans

Last month, I was on the panel for an ABC (Association of Bridal Consultants) Dinner at the newly remodeled Sportsman Lodge in Studio City.

Since the subject matter was one of my favorites (venues), I said yes. The evening was produced by Alexandra Rembac, Principal & Creative Director - Sterling Engagements, who is also the Director of Education, ABC-GLA 2010 (Association of Bridal Consultants, Greater Los Angeles)

I had never been to the Sportsman Lodge and I was excited to see this well known venue for the first time. Vibiana's owners purchased it a few years ago and recently completed the renovation. What is so unique about this venue, located in the heart of Studio City, is that it has the LA River running in its backyard. In the early years, guests could fish out of the river, then have the chef prepare their catch for dinner. Many of the guests at that time were A list celebrities. After the 1950's, the city determined that it was not safe to fish out of the river because of seismic activity and stopped allowing guest to fish.

Our dinner was superb! Their Chef (a very nice person) has an impressive culinary background, which includes working for Wolfgang Puck and preparing dinners for the Oscar parties and Governor's Ball.

No one fell asleep - always a good sign when I am on a panel:)

I am really fortunate to meet some of the most talented people because of my line of work. My client, Victoria Collier and I met for the first time a few weeks ago at a coffee shop in La Cresenta.

Victoria was wearing a very cool butterfly bracelet on her wrist.

While we were talking about her upcoming wedding and getting to know one another, a lady sitting near us asked where she could purchase the bracelet. Victoria explained that she made the bracelet.

GP - When did you get started?

VC - I have been designing accessories and reinventing clothing since I was 8 years old.

GP - Where do you get your inspiration?

VC- My mother was always wearing cameos and painting beautiful butterflies when I was a child. I love to take different textures and materials and create unique ways of putting them together. I use everything from beads, metals, fabrics, pearls, champagne tops, feathers, vintage and estate sale jewelry. I like to use the rosary in some of my pieces. I really enjoy creating new treasures.

GP-How did you start selling your work?

VC-People would come up to me and ask where I bought my pieces. I have had people buy jewelry off of my neck or arm.
